A conversation with Jasper

Let’s start with a conversation.

Wondering whether therapy with me is a good fit? Send me a message. In a free introductory call, we’ll explore your question together.

You’ll hear from me personally within two working days.

Sati is a word from Pali, the language of the oldest Buddhist texts. It stands for open, calm attention: noticing what is going on inside you, without immediately judging it. I did not choose the name because it sounds nice. It describes how I work: with full attention for you as a person, not just for your symptoms.

At the same time, I am a psychologist, not a guru. You get treatments that have proven themselves in research, such as CBT and EMDR, combined with the time and calm that good care needs. Eastern wisdom where it helps, Western science as the foundation. Step by step you regain grip and direction, at a pace that suits you.

What I treat

Does this sound familiar? This is where I help.

Low mood and depressive symptoms
  • Little interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Feeling down or empty, often from the moment you wake up
  • Tired and slow to get going; everything takes energy
  • Harder on yourself, more feelings of guilt

With cognitive behavioural therapy we work step by step towards more energy, more grip and a kinder view of yourself.

Anxiety and panic
  • Pounding heart, sweating or dizziness at unexpected moments
  • Fear of the next panic attack
  • Avoiding situations that trigger tension
  • Constantly checking or seeking reassurance

Anxiety keeps itself going through avoidance; with CBT you break that cycle using proven techniques.

Worrying and overthinking
  • Going over conversations, choices and everything that could go wrong
  • Trouble letting go, even on days off
  • Lying awake at night with your thoughts
  • Tension in your body: jaw, shoulders, stomach

You learn to recognise, examine and let go of worrying thoughts, using a combination of CBT and mindfulness.

Stress, overload and burnout
  • Your battery no longer recharges, not even after a holiday
  • More irritable or emotional than you are used to
  • Trouble concentrating and making more mistakes
  • Running on willpower, with less and less in reserve

We map out what is draining you and tackle the patterns that pushed you towards exhaustion, so that you recover for the long term.

Distressing experiences and trauma
  • Images or dreams that keep forcing themselves on you
  • Jumpy and tense, quickly on your guard
  • Avoiding places or conversations that remind you of it
  • The feeling that it never really settled

With EMDR the emotional charge of the memory decreases, often noticeably within a few sessions.

Phobias
  • Intense fear of something specific: flying, needles, heights, animals
  • Planning your life around avoiding it
  • Panic when avoiding is not an option
  • Knowing the fear is out of proportion, but not feeling it that way

Phobias respond well to a focused approach with CBT and, where appropriate, EMDR; often only a few sessions are needed.

Negative self-image and perfectionism
  • A harsh inner critic that is never satisfied
  • Waving away compliments, carrying mistakes with you for a long time
  • Comparing yourself to others and feeling you fall short
  • Postponing things for fear they will not be good enough

You examine where that harsh voice comes from and learn to look at yourself more realistically and more kindly, without losing your drive.

Difficulty setting boundaries
  • Saying yes while everything inside you screams no
  • Avoiding conflict and putting yourself last
  • Feeling angry afterwards, at yourself or at the other person
  • Overflowing because everything ends up on your plate

We examine what makes setting boundaries difficult for you, and you practise doing it differently, in small, concrete steps.

Sleep problems
  • A racing mind when trying to fall asleep
  • Awake at 4 a.m. with a full head
  • Dreading the night
  • Exhausted during the day, yet wide awake at night

When tension and worrying disrupt your sleep, we tackle the source and you learn to calm your nervous system.

Grief, loss and life questions
  • A loss that keeps weighing on you more heavily than others understand
  • The feeling of standing still while everyone else moves on
  • Questions like: is this all there is?
  • A need for space to sort out what is going on

You are welcome here without a diagnosis too, to give these things space and find direction again.

Is your issue not listed? Sign up anyway; in a free introductory call we will see whether I can help, and if not, I will think along about a better place for you.

About me

Hi, I'm Jasper.

As a psychologist I treat adults with mild to moderate mental health issues, fully online. I know from my own experience that life can be heavy at times. And I believe everyone deserves someone who truly makes room for them and their story.

My way of working is simple: together we examine what is going on, choose an approach that fits and get to work in concrete terms. No endless talking without direction, but no box-ticking either. You set the pace, I guard the course.

I studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam and completed my master’s in clinical psychology at the Open University of the Netherlands. I did my clinical internship in Dutch military mental healthcare and also work as a psychologist in a group practice. There I see that change does not come from protocols alone, but from tailoring and authenticity. That is why I started Sati: a practice without bureaucracy between us.

Outside the practice you will find me on the meditation cushion. I have meditated daily since 2015 and have spent months on retreat several times, from Myanmar to Nepal. I bring that combination of head and calm into my work.

The process

From sign-up to completion

Clarity up front: this is what an average trajectory looks like. Most trajectories take 8 to 14 sessions in total.

01

Sign-up & intake

1 or 2 sessions

After you sign up, we schedule an intake quickly. We map out your symptoms, background and patterns thoroughly and without judgement, and draw up a treatment plan with clear goals together.

02

Understanding

1 or 2 sessions

You gain insight into how your symptoms developed and why you are stuck. We put a finger on the sore spot. That alone creates room for change.

03

Doing

4 to 8 sessions

The core of the treatment. With CBT, EMDR and/or mindfulness you get actively to work: breaking old patterns and building new skills, between sessions too.

04

Completion & relapse prevention

1 or 2 sessions

We evaluate your progress and make a plan to prevent relapse. You make the tools your own, so you can continue on your own afterwards.

Fees

Clear fees, no surprises

Frequently asked questions

Want to check a few things first? Makes sense. These are the most common questions.

Is the treatment covered by my health insurance?
No. As an independent psychologist I deliberately offer care outside the insured system. This means you can start right away (no waiting list), you need no referral or DSM diagnosis, and nothing is shared with your health insurer. Good to know: with insured mental healthcare in the Netherlands you almost always pay your full deductible ("eigen risico", €385) first, so the real difference in cost is often smaller than it seems.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you can sign up directly without a referral. After you sign up, I will contact you within two working days to schedule the intake.
How soon can I start?
Usually you can come in for an intake within a week. I work solo and take on a limited number of new clients each month. If there is no space at the moment, you will hear that straight away when you sign up, along with when space opens up again.
How many sessions will I need?
That differs per person and per issue. Most trajectories take 8 to 14 sessions in total. During the intake we draw up a treatment plan together with a realistic estimate, and we regularly evaluate whether we are on course.
How long is a session and when can they take place?
A session lasts 45 minutes and takes place via a secure video connection. Daytime and evening slots are available, so therapy fits alongside your work or family. All you need is a quiet place and a stable internet connection.
Is online therapy really as effective?
Yes. Research shows that online treatment for issues such as stress, anxiety and low mood is just as effective as in-person treatment. You save travel time, stay in your own familiar surroundings and sessions are easier to schedule, evenings included.
Can EMDR be done online?
Yes, EMDR can be done well and safely online. Research and practice show that online EMDR is just as effective as EMDR in the treatment room. I use specially developed, secure software for this. Read more on the EMDR page.
Will what I share stay confidential?
Yes, completely. As a psychologist I am bound by professional confidentiality and work according to the NIP code of conduct. Because no health insurer is involved, nothing is shared with external parties and your trajectory does not end up in any national database. See also the privacy statement.
I have had therapy before. Is this still worthwhile?
Absolutely. If a previous trajectory did not bring what you hoped for, that often says more about the match or the timing than about you. That makes it all the more valuable to discuss in the intake what did and did not work back then. We take that into account in the approach. And if it does not click between us? Then I will honestly help you find your way elsewhere.
Can I reschedule or cancel an appointment?
Yes, up to 24 hours in advance you can reschedule or cancel free of charge. After that, the session is charged, because the time was reserved for you. See also the terms and conditions.
Who is the practice not suitable for?
To safeguard the quality and safety of the treatment, I treat adults (18+) with mild to moderate issues. The practice is not suitable in cases of acute suicidality or a recent suicide attempt, (suspected) psychosis or bipolar disorder, severe addiction, severe eating disorders, severe personality disorders, or when psychiatric (co-)treatment, medication management or 24-hour availability of care is needed. Dutch primary or specialised mental healthcare (GGZ) is better equipped for that; in that case, contact your GP for a referral. If this only becomes clear during the intake or treatment, I will personally help you find a suitable place.
What do I do in a crisis?
My practice does not provide crisis or emergency care. In an acute crisis or with thoughts of suicide, contact your GP (huisarts) immediately during office hours, or the out-of-hours GP service (huisartsenpost) outside them, and call 112 if lives are at risk. You can also talk anonymously via 113 Suicide Prevention: call 113 or 0800-0113.
How do I sign up?
Fill in the sign-up form and choose what suits you: straight to an intake, or a free 15-minute introductory call first. I will personally get back to you within two working days. Usually you can start within a week. Signing up commits you to nothing: after the intake, you decide whether we continue.
"During the trajectory, Jasper really goes into depth. Thanks to his practical approach we found the patterns that were holding me back from getting the most out of myself, and then broke through them."

More experiences will follow. I only ask clients for a review once their trajectory has been fully completed.
